Logan Wade Lerman (born January 19, 1992) is an American actor, best known for playing the title character in the 2010 fantasy-adventure Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Lerman began appearing in commercials in the mid 1990s, moving to work in feature films and television in the early 2000s, when he starred in the series Jack & Bobby (2004–2005) and the movies The Butterfly Effect (2004) and Hoot (2006). He gained further recognition for his roles in the western 3:10 to Yuma, the thriller The Number 23, and the comedy Meet Bill, as well as his work in the 2009 films Gamer and My One and Only.

Background

Lerman was born in Beverly Hills, California. His mother, Lisa (née Goldman), works as his manager, and his father, Larry Lerman, is a businessman.[1][2] He has two siblings, Lindsey and Lucas,[3] and attended Beverly Hills High School.[4] Lerman is Jewish[5] and grew up in a "stable family background".[4] His family runs the orthotics and prosthetics company Lerman & Son, which was founded by his great-grandfather, Jacob Lerman, in 1915;[2][6] most of his relatives work in the medical profession.[5][7]
Lerman is a self-described "film geek", having stated that he is "shaped by movies".[4][8] He has expressed an interest in writing, producing and directing; in 2010, he applied to study creative writing at New York University, but has postponed his attendance.[2][9][10] Lerman's favorite directors include Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, David Fincher and Peter Bogdanovich,[10] and he has cited American Beauty, Defending Your Life, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as being among his favorite films.[8]

Acting career

Lerman has stated that he had a passion for movies from a young age.[4][10] He appeared in commercials in the 1990s,[11] and subsequently made his film debut in 2000's The Patriot, playing William Martin, one of the children of Mel Gibson's character. The same year, he co-starred with Gibson again in What Women Want, playing Gibson's character as a child. Lerman's next feature film roles were in 2001's Riding in Cars with Boys and the 2004 thriller The Butterfly Effect, portraying younger versions of characters played by Adam Garcia (in the former film) and Ashton Kutcher (in the latter).[12]
Lerman's role in the 2003 made-for-television film A Painted House won him a Young Artist Award for Best Performance by a Leading Young Actor in a television production.[13] In 2004, he was cast in the television series, Jack & Bobby, playing the title role of Robert "Bobby" McCallister, who was destined to become President of the United States. The show ran on The WB Television Network during the 2004–2005 season, and was subsequently canceled, though Lerman won another Young Artist Award for his performance.[14][15]
Continuing his feature film work, Lerman appeared in Hoot, in which he played the lead role of Roy Eberhardt. The film opened on May 5, 2006, and won him a third Young Artist Award, this time for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actor (2007).[16] In 2007, Lerman appeared in The Number 23, in which he played Robin Sparrow, the son of Jim Carrey's character, Walter Sparrow. That year, he also appeared in the critically-acclaimed western 3:10 to Yuma, where he played William Evans, the son of Christian Bale's character; Lerman received positive reviews for his role in the film,[17] and was again nominated for the Young Artist Award - Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actor (2008). It was the second consecutive year he received a nomination in that category, although this time he did not win.[18][19]
In 2008, Lerman played the role of The Kid in Meet Bill (his character is never referred to by name), and in 2009, he appeared in the science-fiction film Gamer, playing Simon, a teenage gamer who controls one of the characters in a video game played with live human subjects; the film was released on September 4, 2009 in North America. Also that summer, Lerman had a leading role in the Renée Zellweger comedy feature My One and Only, playing a teenage version of George Hamilton - an aspiring writer who, after his parents abruptly split, accompanies his mother and brother on a cross-country trip, eventually arriving in Hollywood.[8]
Lerman played Percy Jackson in the 2010 film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the book by Rick Riordan.[20] He was not familiar with the book series when he received the script for the film.[4] Regarding the similarities between Lerman's character and Harry Potter, Lerman told an interviewer: "Honestly, my character doesn't have much in common with Harry Potter besides the fact that he's an unlikely hero who's thrown into a huge situation".[7] Lerman is signed to appear in two more Percy Jackson films, and has stated that he would like to star in adaptations of all five books in the series.[4][21]
Lerman is represented by the Endeavor Agency.[22] He will play d'Artagnan in director Paul W. S. Anderson's 3D film version of The Three Musketeers, which was filmed from August 2010 to November 2010, and is scheduled for release on October 14, 2011.[23] Lerman was cast in the role without having to audition.[24] He will also star in a film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower, playing the lead role, Charlie; as of December 2010, no start date for filming has been set.[25][26]
In 2010, Lerman appeared in "Change the Odds", a public service announcement video for the Stand Up to Cancer charity; the video also featured Dakota Fanning, Zac Efron, Andrew Garfield, and other actors.[27]

Other work

Lerman is a friend of actor Dean Collins,[28] who played his best friend on Jack & Bobby; they remained close after the series' cancellation, and worked together again on Hoot, where Collins had a supporting role. In their spare time, the two collaborated on comedic short films. As well as acting, they wrote, directed, and shot the videos, often enlisting the help of family and friends. The shorts were uploaded to YouTube under the joint account name of "monkeynuts1069".[29]
In 2006, Collins and Lerman formed a band, Indigo, along with musician Daniel Pashman; Collins sings lead vocals, Lerman plays keyboard and guitar, and Pashman plays the drums.[2] Lerman also plays the piano.[30]

Personal Quotes
[US Weekly, 9/18/00] Being married means I can break wind and eat ice cream in bed.
I'm gonna design my own fleet of trailers. No! I'm gonna record an album like Jennifer Lopez. It'll be an acoustic version of KC & The Sunshine Band. Then maybe I'll design a line of clothes like [Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs] but all in synthetic fur.
I'd like to design something like a city or a museum. I want to do something hands on rather than just play golf which is the sport of the religious right.
[Viasat magazine, 5/01] Fame is a bitch, man.
[on what keeps him humble] You know, I telephoned my grandparents the other day, and my grandfather said to me, "We saw your movie." "Which one?" I said, and he shouted, "Betty, what was the name of that movie I didn't like?" I thought that was just classic. I mean, if that doesn't keep your feet on the ground, what would?
I'm one of those people you hate because of genetics. It's the truth.
Success is a beast. And it actually puts the emphasis on the wrong thing. You get away with more instead of looking within.
[Time magazine, 10/13/97] You shouldn't speak until you know what you're talking about. That's why I get uncomfortable with interviews. Reporters ask me what I feel China should do about Tibet. Who cares what I think China should do? I'm a f---ing actor! They hand me a script. I act. I'm here for entertainment. Basically, when you whittle everything away, I'm a grown man who puts on makeup.
When you see a person, do you just concentrate on their looks? It's just a first impression. Then there's someone who doesn't catch your eye immediately, but you talk to them and they become the most beautiful thing in the world. The greatest actors aren't what you would call beautiful sex symbols. I'll tell you who my favorite actress is, Dianne Wiest, and you wouldn't call her a sex symbol. Dianne Wiest is, to me, the most beautiful woman on the screen.
[when asked by Conan O'Brien how he got into character as stoner Floyd in True Romance (1993)] I'm a method actor.
[In May, 2005, on his impending divorce to Jennifer Aniston] The thing I don't understand is looking at this as a failure. It's talked about like it failed, I guess because it wasn't flawless. Me, I embrace the messiness of life. I find it so beautiful, actually.
[2003] It's amazing what an impending midlife crisis will do for you, really. It got me motivated, having turned 40 in December.
[on having children] It really changes your perspective on the world. You know, I've had my day. I made some films, and I've really had a very fortunate life, and it's time for me to share that a little bit. Having children takes the focus off yourself, which I'm really grateful for. I'm so tired of thinking about myself. I'm sick of myself. You feel you want to be there and not miss out on anything. It's a true joy and a very profound love. You can write a book, you can make a movie, you can paint a painting, but having kids is the most extraordinary thing I've ever taken on.
[On how his children will influence his future roles] My thoughts these days are, "Oh, my God, what did I do? What are they going to see from the past?" It definitely colors what I'll approach in the future. I'll try to be a little bit more mature about my decisions.
[On how his earlier, lesser film roles ultimately improved him as an actor]: I believe I'm quite capable and we, as people, can learn to do anything, and that's proof of it! And my education is on film, on record! Now I can take on anything that comes my way and find truth in it an do a pretty good job.
[About Quentin Tarantino) The set is heaven and he is God. Heretics are not allowed
(2010 - on New Orleans) Truthfully, my favorite sound in the entire world is opening up the balcony doors in the French Quarter and hearing four different sounds playing at once from the apartments across the way or down the street. It's a balmy night, twilight, and I'm drinking a beer, and this feeling just falls over me, of contentment. It gives me goosebumps to talk about it.
